Winter Tires in Okotoks

Do I need winter tires in Okotoks?

Alberta does not make you. The roads do.

Alberta has no winter-tire law, so the honest answer is: it depends on where you drive. If your winter is the Highway 2 commute and town streets that get cleared, a good all-weather tire will get you through. If it involves Highway 7 west, the range roads, the hills down into the river valley after a chinook, or early-morning school runs on side streets before the plough, a dedicated winter tire is the right call, and it is not close.

The reason is the rubber. Below about 7°C an all-season compound starts to harden and stops gripping, snow or no snow. A winter compound stays pliable to well below minus thirty, and the thousands of small sipes in the tread grab packed snow and glare ice. Stopping on ice from 50 km/h, a winter tire routinely saves a car length or more over an all-season, which is the difference between the intersection and the middle of it.

One more local fact: heading west, BC requires winter tires on most highways through the winter months, and a snowflake-marked tire satisfies it everywhere.

Winter, all-weather or all-season?

Three tires, three compounds. The chart is the honest version.

The short version: winters are the safest thing you can put on a Foothills vehicle from October to April, all-weathers are the convenient compromise for town-and-highway drivers who will not do a changeover, and all-seasons are a summer tire with a hopeful name in this climate.

When should winter tires go on and come off?

The 7°C rule, not the first snow.

On when daytime highs sit below 7°C, which in Okotoks is usually the middle of October. Off when they stay above it, which is usually mid-April and sometimes May. Do not wait for the first snowfall: that is when every bay in the Foothills fills up, and you will be driving on hardened all-seasons for two weeks while you wait. Do not take them off for a warm chinook week either; the ice comes back the same night.

The eight weeks after the first snow, and the eight after the first warm stretch in April, are our busiest of the year. Book the changeover a week or two out, and if you are buying new winters, order them 48 hours ahead so they are here when you pull in. If the off-season set has nowhere to live, storage takes the hauling out of it.

Studded or studless?

Depends on the road, not the tire.

Modern studless winters are excellent on packed snow and good on ice, and they are quiet on the dry Highway 2 commute. Studs add bite on glare ice and hard-packed gravel, at the cost of noise and a little pavement wear, and they are legal in Alberta year-round. Our rule from the counter: town and highway, go studless; a gravel range road every day, or a hill that glazes after every chinook, go studded. Studs can only go into a new, studdable tire, and we install them here.
