Why Toyo for Foothills driving?

A truck range for every road west of town, with one caveat about deep cold.

Toyo earns its place in the Foothills on trucks. Half the driveways between Okotoks and Black Diamond have a half-ton or a three-quarter-ton in them, and the Open Country range covers all of it: the H/T II for the F-150 that lives on Highway 2, the A/T III for the range roads west of town, the R/T and R/T Trail for the driver who wants more bite without the roar of a mud tire, and the M/T for the one who does. For the diesel three-quarter-ton that works through winter, the WLT1 is a dedicated LT winter tire, and the C/T is a commercial-grade tire that takes studs.

For the car and crossover crowd, the Observe GSi-6 is the studless winter, quiet and strong on ice, and the G3-ICE comes in factory pre-studded sizes for glazed hills and gravel. The Celsius II, Celsius CUV and Celsius Sport are snowflake-rated all-weather tires for the driver who does not want an October and April changeover; the Celsius Cargo covers Transit and ProMaster work vans.

The honest caveat is the A/T III in deep cold. It is tough, resists flats and handles snow well, but Alberta owners keep reporting weak ice grip once the temperature drops below about minus 25, and on a chinook morning when yesterday's melt has frozen into a skin on Highway 7, that matters. If your truck runs the A/T III year round, ask us about a winter set; if it mostly sees pavement, the H/T II with a proper Observe or WLT1 winter is the better pair.

Toyo, the short history

Osaka in 1945 to the Baja 1000, by way of Richmond, BC.

Toyo started in August 1945, when Rikimatsu Tomihisa founded Toyo Tire & Rubber Co. in Japan. It took the Toyo Tire Corporation name in 2019 and runs from Itami, in Hyogo, owning the Toyo and Nitto brands. Its North American plant opened in White, Georgia in 2004; there is no Canadian plant. The firsts that matter here are the Proxes S/T sport truck tire of the late 1990s and the Open Country M/T of 2003, the tire that made the brand on lifted trucks, backed by BJ Baldwin's back-to-back Baja 1000 wins in 2012 and 2013. Toyo Tire Canada opened in 1982 in a small office outside Vancouver, runs today from Richmond, BC with warehouses in BC, Ontario and Quebec, and sells through more than 900 independent dealers across the country.

The praise lands on the winters. Calgary owners say the Observe GSi-6 still performs at minus 30 on ice and snow and stays quiet; an Alberta CX-5 owner who swapped six-year-old Yokohama IceGuards for the GSi-6 LS called them easily as good or better. WLT1 owners on Ram 3500s and 2500 diesels report five winters with the tires still looking new. Celsius CUV owners in Edmonton and rural Alberta report 70,000 km and seven winters, with far better stopping on polished ice than an all-season.

The gripes are the A/T III in deep cold and the first Celsius. Alberta truck owners split hard on the A/T III: one calls it flawless in serious snowfall, another is very disappointed with its ice grip, and a diesel one-ton owner called it terrible in winter. A northern Alberta CR-V owner called the first-generation Celsius terrible on ice.
