COOPER // OHIO, SINCE 1914

Cooper Tires in Okotoks

Cooper is Goodyear's value brand, run from Findlay, Ohio for more than a century. In the Foothills it is a truck brand first: the Discoverer AT3 4S is the year-round snowflake tire on a lot of half-tons, the Snow Claw takes studs for the range roads, and the touring lines carry warranties up to 115,000 km, a tier under the big names.

Why Cooper for Foothills driving?

The do-everything truck tire, studdable winters, and a caveat about half tread.

Cooper is the brand for the truck that does everything. The Discoverer AT3 4S is a snowflake-rated all-terrain in P-metric sizes for the F-150, Silverado and RAV4-class crossovers that run Highway 2 to Calgary all week and a range road on Saturday; the AT3 LT and AT3 XLT carry the same tread into LT and extra-load sizes for three-quarter-tons and one-tons. The Road+Trail AT is the quieter on-road all-terrain with the longest warranty in the truck family at 105,000 km, the Stronghold AT is the newer heavy-duty one, and the HT3 is the plain highway tire for the pickup that never leaves pavement. Rugged Trek, STT Pro, S/T MAXX and Evolution M/T cover the lifted trucks.

For dedicated winters, the Discoverer True North is the studless commuter tire, sized from small cars up to pickups, and the Evolution Winter, Snow Claw and Snow Claw LT take studs, which is what you want on the gravel west of town and on the glazed hills of Highway 7 after a chinook melt refreezes overnight. All four are snowflake-rated. Cooper does not make a dedicated all-weather passenger tire, so a car that wants to skip the October and April changeover should look at another brand; a truck or SUV can lean on the AT3 4S.

The honest caveat comes from Canadian owners: the AT3 4S is very good in snow when new, and noticeably less so once the tread is half worn. Same story on the Rugged Trek, which owners also call weak on glare ice. If your AT3 is into its third winter, measure the tread in October and consider a Snow Claw set for the cold months.

Cooper, the short history

Akron patches in 1914, Findlay ever since, Goodyear-owned since 2021.

Cooper began in 1914 in Akron, Ohio, when brothers-in-law John F. Schaefer and Claude E. Hart bought M and M Manufacturing, a maker of tire patches and repair kits. The company moved to Findlay, Ohio, took its name from director Ira J. Cooper's Cooper Corporation, and became Cooper Tire & Rubber Company in 1946. Its firsts were in construction rather than racing: patented double-breaker truck tires in the 1930s, cold-rubber synthetic treads in the 1940s, the bias-to-radial switch through the 1970s, and its first high-performance tire, the Cobra Radial G/T, in 1987. Goodyear completed its purchase of Cooper on June 7, 2021, and the brand is still run from Findlay. Cooper has no Canadian plant; in Canada the brand is administered by Goodyear Canada, with Western Canada wholesale through Trail Tire Supply in Edmonton.

What prairie owners say

Paraphrased from Saskatchewan and Canadian truck threads, praise and gripes both.

No Alberta-tagged Cooper reviews turned up, so these are Saskatchewan and Canadian truck owners. The praise is for the AT3 4S: an owner who drove from Ontario to Saskatchewan in January on a Ram hit snowstorms and white-outs and was glad he had the Coopers on, with no visible wear after 10,000 km; another ran a full Canadian winter on a Ram 1500 and called the grip amazing. Snow Claw owners with studs on an F-350 say it does well everywhere and stays surprisingly quiet.

The gripes are wear and ice. More than one owner says the AT3 4S went from confident to sliding in light snow at half tread, and one Canadian notes that on a light dusting you will want four-wheel drive. Rugged Trek owners call it sketchy on black ice and loud on the highway; a Toronto test found the Evolution Winter exceptional in deep snow but too specialised for most drivers. Our read: the AT3 4S is the right year-round truck tire for the money, as long as you measure the tread every fall.

Are Cooper winter tires good for Okotoks?

Yes, and all four carry the three-peak mountain snowflake. The Discoverer True North is the studless commuter tire for cars through pickups; the Evolution Winter is a deep-snow specialist for cars and SUVs; the Snow Claw and Snow Claw LT are the SUV and pickup winters, and all three of those take studs, which is the right call for gravel range roads and glazed hills. We fit studs here: see stud installation.

Is the Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S a winter tire?

It carries the three-peak mountain snowflake and a 95,000 km warranty, and Canadian owners who ran it through prairie winters on half-tons praise its grip when new. The caveat, from more than one owner, is that snow traction drops off noticeably once the tread is half worn. Measure it in October; if it is past half, a Snow Claw set for winter is the safer pairing. More on the type on our truck and LT page.

Does Cooper make an all-weather tire?

Not a dedicated passenger one in Canada. Year-round snowflake coverage comes from the truck and SUV all-terrains: the Discoverer AT3 4S, AT3 LT, AT3 XLT, Road+Trail AT, Stronghold AT and Rugged Trek. For a car or small crossover that wants one set year round, the honest answer is another brand; our all-weather page covers the options.

What warranty do Cooper tires carry in Canada?

The km figure is printed on each line: 115,000 km on the ProControl and Discoverer SRX, 105,000 km on the Endeavor, Endeavor Plus and Road+Trail AT, 96,000 km on the Stronghold AT, 95,000 km on the AT3 4S and AT3 LT, 90,000 km on the AT3 XLT and Rugged Trek, 80,000 km on the HT3. Winter and mud-terrain tires carry no treadwear figure. Cooper Canada also offers a 45-day satisfaction guarantee on select tires.
