YOKOHAMA // JAPAN, SINCE 1917

Yokohama Tires in Okotoks

Yokohama is the Japanese name a step under Michelin and Bridgestone on price: founded in 1917, maker of Japan's first snow tire in 1954, and run in Canada from Langley, BC with a distribution centre here in Alberta. Studless iceGUARD winters that owners rate for snow and quiet, the Geolandar truck range with a snowflake on its all-terrains, and the ADVAN performance line.

Why Yokohama for Foothills driving?

Studless winters that owners rate for snow, with one honest caveat about black ice.

Yokohama's winter offer in Canada is studless, all of it. The iceGUARD iG53 is the car and crossover tire for the Highway 2 commute, the iceGUARD G075 is the one for the F-150, the Tahoe and the three-quarter-ton, and the BluEarth Winter V905 and V906 cover the performance sedan that still wants V and W speed ratings in January. All of them carry the three-peak mountain snowflake. What none of them do is take studs. If your winter is gravel range roads west of town and the shaded, glazed hills on Highway 7, and you want studs, the only pinned Yokohama is the Geolandar A/T XD, a commercial-grade all-terrain for full-size pickups and vans. For everyone else, the honest caveat from owners is black ice and freezing rain: the iceGUARDs are excellent in snow and slush and quiet on dry pavement, but on glare ice after a chinook thaw and an overnight refreeze, the Nordic premium tires still lead.

For the driver who wants one set and no October and April changeover, the Geolandar CV 4S G061 is a snowflake-rated all-weather for crossovers, SUVs and minivans. Yokohama sells no passenger-car all-weather in Canada. Trucks get the Geolandar A/T4 G018, a snowflake-rated all-terrain that replaced the A/T G015 in 2024 with a 105,000 km warranty, and the Geolandar H/T G056 for the truck that lives on pavement, with 115,000 km of coverage in P-metric sizes. Summer touring is the Avid Ascend line at 110,000 to 130,000 km, and the ADVAN Sport EV A/S is the EV tire.

Yokohama, the short history

Japan's first snow tire, the ADVAN name, and a Canadian arm in Langley since 1983.

Yokohama Rubber was founded on 13 October 1917 as a joint venture between Yokohama Cable Manufacturing and BFGoodrich, and is headquartered in Hiratsuka, Japan, with about 34,000 employees. It built Japan's first cord tire in 1921, Japan's first snow tire, the Y-29, in 1954, and Japan's first tubeless tire the year after. The ADVAN performance brand launched in 1978, Geolandar in 1996 and iceGUARD in 2002. Its motorsport record runs from a Pikes Peak win with an electric race car in 2010 to Super Formula and Formula Drift. Yokohama came to North America in 1969; its Salem, Virginia passenger plant closed in March 2026, leaving West Point, Mississippi as the only US plant. Yokohama Tire (Canada) was set up in 1983, is run from Langley, BC, and operates distribution centres in Quebec and Alberta.

What owners say

Thin on Alberta voices, so paraphrased from retailer reviews and the BC and Alaska threads, praise and gripes both.

Alberta threads are thin, so the read comes from retailer reviews and the BC and Alaska forums. The praise is consistent on the iceGUARDs: "excellent traction on snow, ice, and slush", a "quiet and smooth ride for a winter tire", tread life that beats most studless winters, and a price under the Michelin X-Ice and Bridgestone Blizzak. G075 owners talk about deep snow, up to 40 centimetres, and a quiet ride on dry pavement. Geolandar A/T XD owners in Fairbanks and BC value the snowflake rating and the stud option, and report no noise complaints.

The gripes are about ice. A steady minority of iceGUARD reviews report "less grip in freezing rain and on black ice", and owners who have run both rank the iceGUARD behind the Nordic premium tires there. The other complaint is structural: no Yokohama passenger winter takes studs. Our read: for the Highway 2 commuter who sees more snow than glare ice, the iG53 and G075 are a very good buy; for the range-road driver who wants studs, we would steer you to another brand.

Straight Answers

Did not find it? Call (403) 938-3110 during shop hours, or ask at the counter.

Are Yokohama winter tires good for Okotoks?

Yes, with one condition: they are studless only. The iceGUARD iG53 for cars and the G075 for SUVs and trucks carry the three-peak mountain snowflake, and owners rate them highly for snow, slush and quiet running. The recurring gripe is black ice and freezing rain, where the Nordic premium tires still lead, so a driver who lives on glazed range roads and wants studs should look at another brand.

Can Yokohama winter tires take studs?

No. Every Yokohama passenger and light-truck winter sold in Canada, the iceGUARD iG53, G075 and iG51v and the BluEarth Winter V905 and V906, is studless. The only Yokohama pinned for studs is the Geolandar A/T XD, a commercial-grade all-terrain for full-size pickups and vans that an Alaska owner runs with tungsten-carbide studs. If studs are the priority, ask us about a stud-ready winter from another brand.

Does Yokohama make an all-weather tire?

In Canada, one, for crossovers and SUVs: the Geolandar CV 4S G061, a three-peak mountain snowflake all-weather launched in late 2023. The BluEarth-4S AW21 you may have read about is a European tire and is not sold in North America, and there is no Yokohama passenger-car all-weather here. For trucks, the Geolandar A/T4 and A/T G015 carry the snowflake, but an all-terrain is not a winter tire.

What warranty do Yokohama tires carry in Canada?

Every line gets a 30-day guarantee and a workmanship and materials warranty with free replacement in the first 25 percent of wear. Tread coverage runs 130,000 km on the Avid Ascend LX and Avid Touring-S, 115,000 km on the Geolandar H/T in P-metric sizes, 110,000 km on the Avid Ascend GT, 105,000 km on the Geolandar A/T4, 100,000 km on the Geolandar CV and 90,000 km on the ADVAN Sport EV A/S. The iceGUARD and BluEarth winters carry no tread warranty.
