Why buy tires from an independent shop in Okotoks?

Okotoks has a few places to buy tires, and most of them are fine at it. The difference is everything around the tires. At a chain, the person who quotes you, the person who books you and the person who sorts it out when something goes sideways are usually three different people in three different buildings, one of them in another time zone. What do Okotoks roads do to a set of tires?

Okotoks is a commuter town in a river valley, which is a specific kind of hard on tires.

Most of the town drives north every morning: Highway 2A up through Northridge, or east to Highway 2 at Aldersyde and on into south Calgary. Call it forty minutes of highway a day, each way, in every season. Highway kilometres wear tires evenly but fast, and they punish anything out of alignment. A touch of toe you would never notice around town becomes a feathered edge by spring, and a feathered edge is a tire you replace a year early.

Then there is the weather. A chinook can take the Foothills from minus twenty to plus eight in an afternoon. Do I need an appointment?

It is one bay. That is the honest constraint, and it is also why the work is good: one vehicle at a time, the same hands on every job.

Most of the year, call in the morning and we can usually fit you in the same day or the next. Flat repairs and TPMS jobs get worked in around the schedule. Twice a year the bay fills fast: the two weeks after the first real snow in October, and the first warm stretch in April when everyone remembers the winters are still on. Book those a week or two out, and if you are buying tires for the changeover, order them 48 hours ahead so they are here when you pull in.

Which tire brands fit Foothills driving?

We stock fourteen brands and there is no house brand we push. The right tire depends on the vehicle and the commute more than the badge, but after thirty-four years some patterns hold.

The Highway 2 commuter, in a sedan, crossover or half-ton: the case for an all-weather tire is strong. Three-peak mountain snowflake rated, legal and safe through winter, and it stays on the car year-round, which means no changeover, no storage and one set to buy. Michelin, Toyo, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Hankook, General and Yokohama all make a proper all-weather now.

Ice and the school run: a dedicated winter tire still wins on glare ice, and if you do a lot of early-morning driving on side streets it is worth the changeover. Bridgestone, Michelin, Toyo, Hankook, Yokohama and Pirelli all make a serious one, and for gravel range roads and hard-packed ice there are studdable winters from Toyo, Hankook, General, Cooper and Hercules. Three-quarter-tons, work trucks and anything that tows: buy the load rating first and the tread pattern second. BFGoodrich, Toyo, Cooper, General, Goodyear and Hercules cover the light-truck range from highway all-seasons to all-terrains that shrug off the gravel; Michelin and Bridgestone for the highway-only truck that wants quiet and mileage.

On a budget: General is Continental's value brand and Uniroyal is Michelin's, and both are tires we are comfortable putting on a family car. Hercules is the distributor brand built for exactly this kind of buyer. What we will not do is sell you the premium tire when the mid-tier is the right call, or the cheap one when you drive forty thousand kilometres a year on Highway 2.
