Why Uniroyal for Foothills driving?

The budget winter that still carries the snowflake, and where the cheap truck tire falls short.

Uniroyal is the tire for the driver who needs a real winter set and does not want to pay Michelin money for it. The Tiger Paw Ice & Snow 4 is the pick: snowflake and Ice Grip rated, launched in Canada first in September 2024 with full-depth interlocking sipes and 57 sizes from sedans to pickups, so it covers the Highway 2 commuter in a Corolla and the F-150 in the same line. Michelin says it stops shorter on ice than the Ice & Snow 3 it replaced, and a Montreal road test found excellent snow traction and good slush evacuation.

The Ice & Snow 3 stays on sale for one reason: it takes studs. Alberta has no winter tire law and studs are legal here, so for the range roads west of town, the Highway 7 gravel and the glare ice a chinook leaves behind, a studded set of Ice & Snow 3s is the cheapest honest answer on the wall. Expect noise; owners say so, and they say it is worth it. Fit them in October and take them off in April.

For the rest of the year the Tiger Paw Touring A/S carries a 120,000 km warranty on the family car and minivan, and the Laredo HT is the highway tire for a half-ton that mostly sees pavement. The honest caveat is the Laredo AT: it is a budget all-terrain with no snowflake, and owners who ran it through a snow and ice storm said they would not buy it again. If your truck works through winter, put an Ice & Snow 4 on it and save the Laredo for summer. The other recurring gripe is road noise on the Touring A/S, and sizes can be spotty, so we check before we promise.

Uniroyal, the short history

U.S. Rubber, the Tiger Paw, and a Kitchener plant that built them from 1914.

Uniroyal began in 1892 as the United States Rubber Company, a merger of rubber makers in Naugatuck, Connecticut. It gave the world Keds sneakers, took the Uniroyal name in the 1960s, and put the Tiger Paw tire on that decade's muscle cars, the Pontiac GTO among them. The tire business merged with BFGoodrich in 1986, and Michelin bought the combined Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Company in 1990. In North America Uniroyal has been a Michelin brand ever since; in Europe the same name belongs to Continental, which bought the European factories in 1979. The Canadian connection is real: Uniroyal's Canadian arm was the Dominion Rubber Company, whose Kitchener, Ontario tire plant opened in 1914 and carried the Uniroyal name from 1966. Canadian marketing runs from Laval, Quebec, where the Ice & Snow 4 was launched to Canada first.

What Alberta owners say

The sensible cheap winter, with noise as the trade. Paraphrased, praise and gripes both.

We could not find an Alberta-located review of a current Uniroyal, so the voices here are Canadian, mostly Quebec or unstated. A RAV4 owner on the Ice & Snow 3 called it "one of the best winter tires I've ever used." A Quebec buyer of the studded 3 was "surprised by the cost-to-quality ratio" and added "very loud tire, but you know what to expect with studs." A BC retailer's reviews of the Ice & Snow line sum to excellent snow and ice grip and a quiet ride, while a Mazda 3 owner rated them below the Michelin X-Ice.

The gripes: the Touring A/S is called loud by more than one owner, the 3's shallow sipes lose bite as they wear (the 4 was built to fix that), the Laredo AT is weak in snow and ice, and sizes can be hard to find. Our read: the Ice & Snow 4 is a very good value winter for a driver on a budget, and the studded 3 is the range-road answer at the same money.

Are Uniroyal winter tires good for Okotoks?

It is a legitimate winter tire from a serious maker at the low end of the wall, and that is the whole pitch.

Does Uniroyal make an all-weather tire?
