Tire Shop for Diamond Valley

Black Diamond and Turner Valley became one town in 2023, and the drive in from either side is the same twenty minutes east on Highway 7. Diamond Valley drivers ask us different questions than town drivers do, because the roads out there climb, glaze and turn to gravel, and a tire that is fine on Southridge is not automatically fine on the way down into the Sheep River valley.

The drive from Diamond Valley

Twenty minutes on Highway 7, and one road the whole way.

Highway 7 runs straight from the Cowboy Trail junction into Okotoks, and it is twenty-three kilometres of rolling foothills country. Twenty minutes in normal conditions. In winter it is one of the first roads around here to drift and one of the last to be bare, which is exactly why the conversation with Diamond Valley customers starts with grip rather than with price.

Once you are in Okotoks, Highway 7 becomes the road into town and we are on South Railway Street by the tracks. Parking is out front.

Because it is a twenty-minute drive on a road that gets interesting in winter, we would rather book you in ahead of a storm than fit you in after one. Call in early October and the changeover happens on a dry day of your choosing.

Hills, chinooks and gravel

The three things that decide a tire out there.

The country west of Okotoks climbs, and a hill changes everything about tire choice. Grade means you need traction to get up and braking to get down, and the surface at the bottom of a shaded hill is usually the last ice in the Foothills to go.

Chinooks make it worse before they make it better. A warm afternoon melts the pack, the melt runs across the road, and it freezes into glare ice as soon as the sun drops behind the mountains. That cycle repeats all winter on Highway 22 and on every side road off it.

Then gravel. The range roads through the county are hard on sidewalls, and a passenger-construction tire on a ranch truck picks up cuts and chips that a light truck casing shrugs off. Our chinook and black ice guide covers the driving side of this, and the tire side is straightforward: buy for the worst surface you drive, not the average one.

What we fit most for Diamond Valley

Studs, snowflake-rated all-terrains, and trailer sets.

Studs come up more with Diamond Valley drivers than with most, and the reason is the hills. Tungsten studs bite polished ice and hard-packed gravel in a way rubber cannot, they are legal in Alberta year-round, and on a shaded grade in February the difference is not subtle.

For trucks that work, a snowflake-rated all-terrain covers three seasons and a fair bit of the fourth, with a dedicated winter set for the drivers who are out before the plough. Load range comes first if there is a trailer behind it.

For the cars and crossovers, a modern studless winter tire is still the best all-round answer, and an all-weather set is the honest compromise for anyone whose winter driving is mostly the run into Okotoks on a cleared highway.

Book it before the weather does

The hills are why October books early.

Every year the first cold snap fills our book, and the ice arrives in the west first. Booking two or three weeks ahead in October is the single best thing a Diamond Valley driver can do, and it costs nothing.

Stack the visit while you are here: a changeover, a wheel alignment after a summer of gravel, and a rotation and balance is one trip instead of three.

And if the off-season set is taking up space in the shop, leave it with us. It is one less thing to load into the truck for a twenty-minute drive twice a year.

Do you fit studded tires?

Yes, tungsten studs fitted with a stud gun into new studdable winter tires. It is a job we do a lot for customers west of Okotoks.

Are studs legal in Alberta?

Yes, year-round, with no seasonal dates. Check the rules before driving into another province, because several of them do restrict studs.

When should I book my changeover?

Early October if you live west of town. The hills glaze before the highway does, which is why the west books early.

Do you handle trailer and ranch equipment tires?
