PIRELLI // MILAN, SINCE 1872
Pirelli Tires in Okotoks
Pirelli is the Milan name that has supplied every Formula 1 tire since 2011, carries factory approvals from Audi, BMW, Porsche and Tesla, and came factory-fitted on the 2021 F-150. For Foothills driving that means the Ice Zero Asimmetrico and Scorpion Winter 2 studless winters, two snowflake all-weathers, and the Scorpion truck range, a premium tire with a Canadian warranty in kilometres.
Why Pirelli for Foothills driving?
Strongest on the premium and EV fitments, with an honest word about ice.
Pirelli's strength here is the premium fitment. If your Highway 2 commuter is an Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche or Tesla, the Winter Sottozero 3 and P Zero Winter carry the factory approvals for it, with Elect versions built for EV weight and torque and run-flat options. For the compact, the minivan and the family SUV, the Ice Zero Asimmetrico is the mainstream studless, snowflake rated, and it replaced the Ice Zero FR with better ice braking. The Cinturato Winter 2 covers cars and small crossovers and the Scorpion Winter 2 covers the big SUVs up to 23 inch, both snowflake rated.
For the range roads west of town and the Highway 7 gravel, the answer is studs: the Scorpion Ice Zero 2 comes factory-studded and directional for SUVs and crossovers, and the Winter Ice Zero does the same for cars. Alberta allows them, and the ice a chinook melt leaves behind overnight is exactly what they are for. On the trucks, the Scorpion ATR is the tire the 2021 F-150 came on in 275/60R20 and 265/70R17, and the Scorpion All Terrain Plus and the new Scorpion XTM AT both carry the snowflake for a half-ton or three-quarter-ton that works through winter.
One-set drivers get the Cinturato WeatherActive for cars and the Scorpion WeatherActive for crossovers, SUVs and pickups, both snowflake rated with 100,000 km of tread coverage, which takes the October and April changeovers off the calendar. The honest caveat comes from a Calgary owner who ran Scorpion all-weathers for three winters: fine around town, noticeably behind a dedicated winter tire when it got bad. On glare ice the studless Pirellis are rated a step behind Michelin and Nokian, so for the deep-winter driver the dedicated winter set or the studded line is the right call.

Pirelli, the short history
Milan since 1872, Formula 1 since 2011, and Montreal in the name of the race.
Giovanni Battista Pirelli founded G.B. Pirelli & C. in Milan in 1872 to make elastic rubber goods. The first bicycle tire came in 1894, car tires in 1901, and in 1907 Pirelli won the first Grand Prix of the Automobile Club de France. In the early 1950s it introduced the Cinturato, the radial with a belt between carcass and tread, and in 1988 it entered North America by buying Armstrong Tire. It has been Formula 1's sole tire supplier since 2011 and is confirmed through 2027; the 2025 Montreal race ran as the Formula 1 Pirelli Grand Prix du Canada. Winter tires are developed at the Sottozero Centre at Flurheden, Sweden, opened in 2017. North American tires come mainly from Rome, Georgia and Silao, Mexico. Pirelli Tire Inc. runs Canada from Saint-Laurent, Quebec, with a Vancouver warehouse serving the West.
What Alberta owners say
Thin on the prairies; paraphrased from what could be found, praise and gripes both.
Pirelli winter tires are rarely the subject of an Alberta thread; the Calgary and Edmonton recommendations run to Nokian, Michelin and Bridgestone. An Edmonton buyer weighing the old Ice Zero FR against the Michelin X-Ice was told to pay the extra for the Michelin's winter handling. A Calgary driver who ran Scorpion all-weathers for three winters said they "performed fairly well during winters" but were noticeably behind dedicated winter tires. No prairie owner has posted a review of the current Ice Zero Asimmetrico that we could find.
The praise is where you would expect it: the fit on premium and EV vehicles is the strong suit, and the Scorpion all-weathers are acceptable for a city winter. The gripes: the winter lines are judged a step behind Michelin and Nokian on ice, and they are priced as premium tires. Our read: if your car came on Pirellis, staying on them is the easy right answer; if you are cross-shopping a winter set on ice grip alone, look at the whole wall first.

Are Pirelli winter tires good for Okotoks?
Yes, with the right expectations. The Ice Zero Asimmetrico, Cinturato Winter 2 and Scorpion Winter 2 are all snowflake rated, and the Asimmetrico brakes shorter on ice than the FR it replaced. Owners who have run both still put the studless Pirellis a step behind Michelin and Nokian on glare ice. For the range roads, the factory-studded Scorpion Ice Zero 2 and Winter Ice Zero close that gap; see our winter tires page for the whole wall.
My car came on Pirellis from the factory. Should I stay with them?
Usually, yes. Pirelli's business is original-equipment fitment: the Winter Sottozero 3 and P Zero Winter carry approvals from Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Tesla and Lucid, and the Elect versions are built for EV weight, torque and range. It is the same company that has supplied every Formula 1 tire since 2011. If your vehicle is a Corolla or a half-ton, the factory-fit argument matters less and the whole wall is open to you.
Does Pirelli make an all-weather tire?
Two. The Cinturato WeatherActive for cars and the Scorpion WeatherActive for crossovers, SUVs and pickups, both snowflake rated with 100,000 km of tread coverage and a 60-day trial. A Calgary owner who ran the Scorpions for three winters rated them fine around town and a clear step behind a dedicated winter tire in the bad weeks, which is our read on all-weathers generally.
What warranty do Pirelli tires carry in Canada?
The Pirelli Tire Inc. Canadian warranty quotes tread life in kilometres: 135,000 km on the P4 Persist AS Plus, 110,000 km on the P7 AS Plus 3 and Scorpion AS Plus 3, 105,000 km on the Scorpion STR, 100,000 km on both WeatherActives, 80,000 km on the Scorpion ATR, All Terrain Plus and P Zero AS Plus 3. Winter lines carry no mileage coverage. A non-Elect tire fitted to an EV is honoured at 80 percent of the listed figure, and most all-season lines add a 60-day trial.
