Why Continental for Foothills driving?

The quiet winter and the new all-weather, with one honest gap in the truck range.

Continental earns its place here on two tires. The VikingContact 8 is the studless winter for the Highway 2 commute: snowflake and Ice Grip marked, an A noise rating in every size, and a casing built to be easy on EV range, so it suits the Model 3 as well as the Civic. It replaced the VikingContact 7 in August 2025. Owners call it quiet and composed in slush, which is most of what the drive to Calgary is from November to March. On the glare ice a chinook leaves after a melt and refreeze, it sits a half step behind Blizzak and X-Ice, and it cannot be studded.

The SecureContact AW is the one for the driver who wants a single set. It is Continental's first all-weather, launched in Canada in June 2025, snowflake rated with up to 100,000 km of tread coverage, so the October and April changeovers go away. For the range roads west of town and the Highway 7 run to Black Diamond, the IceContact XTRM comes studded from the factory with crushed-ice reservoirs around each stud, and the WinterContact SI Plus is the directional, mid-priced winter for the second car.

The honest gap is trucks. The TerrainContact H/T and A/T are good highway and all-terrain tires with 112,000 and 96,000 km warranties, and the H/T covers the 275/60R20 that the F-150 and Ram 1500 come on, but neither carries the snowflake. A half-ton or three-quarter-ton that works through winter wants the snowflake, and on Continental that means a VikingContact 8 in a light-truck size rather than a TerrainContact. Owner sentiment lines up with all of this: strong on snow and slush, quiet, and a premium price for a tire that gives up a little on bare ice.

Continental, the short history

One of the first winter tires, in 1934, and a test site near the Arctic Circle.

Continental started in Hanover, Germany on 8 October 1871 as the Continental-Caoutchouc- und Gutta-Percha Compagnie, making rubber goods and solid bicycle tires. It was the first German company to build pneumatic bicycle tires, in 1892, and the first to put a tread pattern on a car tire, in 1904. In 1934 it launched the Gelände, one of the first winter tires anywhere, followed by Europe's first M+S winters in 1952 and a studless winter tire in 1972. It has run the Contidrom test track near Hanover since 1967 and tests winter tires near the Arctic Circle at Arvidsjaur, Sweden, where a new model logs about 500,000 test kilometres before it ships. Continental Tire Canada is based in Mississauga, Ontario, and since 2021 has been the tire sponsor of the Rocky Mountain Motorsports track north of Calgary.

Continental is not the first name in the Calgary winter threads. Ask r/Calgary for winter tire advice and you get Nokian, Blizzak and X-Ice; Continental rarely comes up. The praise that does exist is consistent: the VikingContact is quiet, stable in slush and wet, and easy on EV range. A Pacifica owner on the VikingContact 7 wrote that before these tires "I was sliding at the stop signs", and a Model 3 owner called them a good budget option next to Blizzaks. A Toronto buyer weighing the VikingContact 8 against cheaper shop suggestions was told, "I have never heard a single person regret getting better tires."

The gripes: a premium price, ice grip a half step behind Blizzak and X-Ice, no studdable VikingContact, and no tread-life warranty on the winter line. Our read: for a commuter who values a quiet car and mostly sees snow and slush, it is a very good tire; for glare ice after a chinook, Michelin and Nokian still hold the edge, and the factory-studded IceContact XTRM is Continental's own answer.
