Why Hercules for Foothills driving?

Hercules is the brand we reach for when the budget is the first question and the driving is still real. The Avalanche winters are the core of it: the RT for the car or crossover on the Highway 2 commute, the XUV for the Escape or the RAV4, and the TT in LT sizes for the F-150 or the three-quarter-ton. All three carry the three-peak mountain snowflake and all three are pinned for studs, which matters on the range roads west of town and on Highway 7, where a chinook turns packed snow to glaze overnight and back to slush by noon.

For the driver who wants one set and no October and April changeover, the Terra Trac Cross-V AW is a snowflake-rated all-weather for crossovers, SUVs and light trucks with 105,000 km of coverage. Hercules makes no passenger-car all-weather, so a sedan driver runs the Roadtour Connect AS in summer and an Avalanche RT in winter. Trucks get the Terra Trac AT X-Venture and X-Journey, both snowflake-rated all-terrains, and the HPT or Cross-V for the truck that lives on pavement.

Then the trailer. The Strong Guard ST is a proper high-speed radial trailer tire from ST175/80R13 to ST235/85R16, load range C to F, for the boat headed to the lake, the horse trailer on Highway 22 or the fifth-wheel going west for the long weekend. The honest caveat: Hercules is the value pick, priced under General and the other mid-market names, and the independent review base is thinner than the bigger names have. Owners say it holds up fine. For the driver who wants the last word on ice, spend up; for the driver who wants a fair price with a trial period and a real warranty behind it, this is the one.

Hercules, the short history

A distributor's brand from Findlay, Ohio, built under contract since 1952.

Hercules started in 1952 in Findlay, Ohio, and its first dealer, Robbins & Franke of Cliffside Park, New Jersey, is still trading. It has always been a distributor's brand rather than a factory's: since 2014 it has been wholly owned by American Tire Distributors, the North Carolina wholesaler, and its tires are built under contract, chiefly by Cooper Tire in Findlay, which Goodyear bought in 2021. The 2024 recall paperwork on the Terra Trac AT X-Venture names Goodyear as the manufacturer. The brand marked its 70th anniversary in 2022 with a rebrand and kept the tagline, Ride On Our Strength. In Canada, Hercules is distributed exclusively by Groupe Touchette of Montreal, which took over ATD's Canadian arm in 2022; the Terra Trac Cross-V AW and Roadtour Connect AS reached this market in April 2024.

The review base is thin, and none of it we found is from Alberta. What exists is American and Ontarian, and the theme is consistent: cheaper than the majors, holds up fine. A Ford Ranger owner on the Terra Trac all-terrains planned to move up to the M/T or T/G Max when they wore out; a shop-adjacent poster said his dad tried them and found them "pretty solid"; a RAV4 owner on YouTube called the Avalanche RT a winter tire that fits most budgets and "works perfectly." The warmest words go to the all-terrain lines, and the 45-day trial and two-year road-hazard plan come up as the edge over other budget tires.

The gripes are about origin and trailer tires. RV owners in the Forest River forums found some Hercules trailer lines now come from Thailand and argue about durability; the country of build varies by line.
