BRIDGESTONE // JAPAN, 1931

Bridgestone Tires in Okotoks

Bridgestone is the brand people mean when they say Blizzak: the Japanese company that built Japan's first studless winter tire, with a Quebec plant that opened in 1965. The new Blizzak IcePeak is the ice-braking benchmark in the bay, the UltraWeather is its year-round answer, and the Dueler and Alenza lines cover trucks and SUVs.

Why Bridgestone for Foothills driving?

Ice braking first, with one honest caveat about wear.

Bridgestone in the Foothills is a Blizzak story. For the Highway 2 commuter the Blizzak IcePeak is the winter tire: studless, snowflake-rated and the first Bridgestone with the Ice Grip mark, one line that replaces both the WS90 for cars and the DM-V2 for SUVs and trucks. Ice braking is the whole Blizzak brand, and it is what you want at the glazed intersections a chinook leaves the morning after. The WS90 and DM-V2 stay available while the IcePeak sizes fill in, and the Blizzak 6 and LM005 cover performance cars. Nothing in the range takes studs, so a driver who wants studs for the gravel range roads west of town should look at a stud-ready brand.

For the driver who wants to skip the October and April changeover, the UltraWeather is the one-set option: a snowflake-rated grand touring tire for cars, crossovers, SUVs and trucks that replaces the WeatherPeak. A southern Alberta tire-shop veteran counts Bridgestone among the all-weathers that beat a no-name winter tire through freeze-thaw and minus 30 mornings. A car that winters on the range roads still wants a Blizzak.

Trucks get the Dueler range. The Dueler H/T 684 II is the highway tire for an F-150, with a 100,000 km warranty; the H/T 685 is the heavy-duty version for a three-quarter-ton that tows; the Dueler A/T Ascent is the snowflake-rated all-terrain for Highway 7 gravel. The Alenza AS Ultra is the quiet premium touring tire for SUVs, with 130,000 km of coverage.

The honest caveat is wear. Blizzak's soft compound is what makes it work, and a Calgary skier who does 15,000 km a winter says it fades toward an all-season after a couple of hard seasons. Keep it for winter only, rotate it, and expect fewer seasons than a Michelin.

Bridgestone, the short history

Japan's first studless winter tire, and a Quebec plant since 1965.

Bridgestone was founded in Kurume, Fukuoka, on March 1, 1931 by Shojiro Ishibashi, whose surname means "stone bridge"; he flipped the words for an English name that would sell abroad. The head office moved to Tokyo in 1937. The company built Japan's first passenger-car radials in 1964 and Japan's first studless winter tire in 1982, then launched the Blizzak line in 1988 and bought Firestone the same year. The parent is Bridgestone Corporation in Tokyo; the Americas business runs from Nashville, and Bridgestone Canada Inc. from Mississauga, Ontario. Its one Canadian plant is Joliette, Quebec, built in 1965 as a Firestone plant and now producing more than 17,000 passenger, SUV and light-truck tires a day. Bridgestone is also the official tire of the NHL, the NHLPA and the Hockey Hall of Fame.

What Alberta owners say

Paraphrased from the Calgary and Edmonton winter threads, praise and gripes both.

The praise is ice braking. A Calgary F-150 owner in the winter threads uses Blizzak as the nine-out-of-ten benchmark the all-terrains fall short of, and an Edmonton Jeep owner says of his DM-V2s, "I LOVED THEM". Owners call them quiet, and the DM-V2 has a loyal SUV and truck following. A Calgary enthusiast who has run Blizzaks, X-Ices, Contis and Hakkas calls them all good, though he prefers studded Nokians at freeze-thaw intersections.

The gripes are wear and warranty. A Calgary skier doing 15,000 km a winter says the soft compound "is not very thick and wears off fairly quickly leaving you with an all season basically", and that Nokian and Michelin wear longer. Blizzaks carry no mileage warranty, and nothing in the range takes studs. An Alberta Mazda 6 owner keeps his Blizzaks on steel wheels but has not missed them after three winters on an all-weather, a sign town drivers are cross-shopping. Our read: for a driver whose worst moments are braking on ice, Blizzak is the tire; budget for replacing it a season sooner than the competition.

Are Bridgestone winter tires good for Okotoks?

Yes, and on ice they are the benchmark. The Blizzak IcePeak is studless, snowflake-rated and Ice Grip certified, and Alberta owners put Blizzak ice braking at the top of the class. Two honest notes: the soft compound wears faster than a Michelin or Nokian, and no Blizzak takes studs, so a range-road driver who wants studs should look at another brand. See our winter tires page.

What replaced the Blizzak WS90 and DM-V2?

The Blizzak IcePeak, launched in May 2026, replaces both in one line: 107 sizes from 14 to 22 inch, for sedans, crossovers, SUVs, minivans and trucks, and the first Bridgestone with both the snowflake and the Ice Grip mark. Bridgestone says it wears better and rolls easier than the two it replaces. The WS90 and DM-V2 are still listed while the changeover runs.

Does Bridgestone make an all-weather tire?

The UltraWeather, available from June 2026, replaces the WeatherPeak: a snowflake-rated grand touring tire for cars, minivans, crossovers, SUVs and trucks in 61 sizes from 16 to 22 inch. Bridgestone has not published a Canadian km warranty for it yet. For town and Highway 2 driving it is a real one-set option; see our all-weather tires page.

What warranty do Bridgestone tires carry in Canada?

It varies by line, and the Blizzak winter tires carry no km figure at all. Published Canadian coverage: 130,000 km on the Alenza AS Ultra and Dueler H/L Alenza Plus, 110,000 km on the Ecopia EP422 Plus, 100,000 km on the Dueler H/T 684 II, 80,000 km on the Potenza Sport AS and Turanza EV. Bridgestone Canada also runs a 90-day Buy and Try guarantee.
