Why General for Foothills driving?

A winter line rebuilt for Canada this year, and the truck tire BC drivers pick over the KO2.

General is the sensible middle of the rack: Continental engineering a tier under the Continental price. For the Highway 2 commuter in a sedan or crossover, the new AltiMAX Arctic X is the winter to ask about. It went on sale in Canada in March 2026, five months ahead of the US, carries the three-peak mountain snowflake and is pinned for studs. Its predecessor, the AltiMAX Arctic 12, is still in the catalogue and still a strong snow tire; the honest caveat is that a steady minority of owners rated its ice grip below the version before it and found it wandered in highway grooves, which you feel on Highway 2. The Arctic X is the answer to both.

For the F-150 or the three-quarter-ton, the Grabber Arctic X is the SUV and pickup version, with the Grabber Arctic LT for heavy-duty sizes. Both take studs, which is what the gravel range roads west of town and the shaded hills on Highway 7 call for once a chinook has melted and refrozen everything. The Grabber A/TX is the all-terrain that BC and Alaska drivers prefer to the BFGoodrich KO2 in snow, and it too is pinned for studs; the Grabber APT is the quieter all-terrain for the crossover, snowflake-rated in select sizes; the Grabber H/T and HTS60 suit the truck that lives on pavement.

For the driver who wants one set and no October and April changeover, the AltiMAX 365 AW is a snowflake-rated all-weather for cars and crossovers that Bolt owners run for its small range penalty. One caution from the threads: a snowflake all-terrain is not a real winter tire. A truck that sees Highway 2 at minus thirty belongs on a Grabber Arctic X in winter and the A/TX the rest of the year.

General, the short history

Akron, 1915: balloon tires, Baja wins, and Continental since 1987.

General Tire was founded in Akron, Ohio, on 29 September 1915 by William O'Neil and Winfred Fouse, on money borrowed from O'Neil's father's store. It made its name on oversized truck tires and the low-pressure General Jumbo balloon tire of 1920, and became original equipment at General Motors in 1955. The parent grew into the GenCorp conglomerate, then sold the tire business to Continental AG of Hanover in 1987. General is now Continental's North American second brand, run from Fort Mill, South Carolina. The Grabber name carries real off-road history as the spec tire of the SCORE Pro Truck class, with Baja 1000 class wins. In Canada, General Tire Canada is a subsidiary of Continental Tire Canada in Mississauga; General ran a Barrie, Ontario plant until 1991 and has been the official tire of the NASCAR Canada Series since 2019.

Retailer reviews rate it well for snow, slush, quiet and price, but a recurring minority report poorer ice grip than the earlier version and wandering in highway grooves. And the threads are blunt that a snowflake all-terrain is not a real snow tire. Are General winter tires good for Okotoks?

The AltiMAX 365 AW: a three-peak mountain snowflake all-weather for cars and crossovers, introduced in Canada in 2021, that shows up in most all-weather shortlists as the cheaper option behind the Michelin CrossClimate2 and Nokian WRG5. Bolt owners run it for snow-tire grip with no real range hit. For trucks, the Grabber A/TX and APT carry the snowflake, but a snowflake all-terrain is not a winter tire.

What warranty do General tires carry in Canada?

The Shield+ Advantage Plan: a 45-day satisfaction trial, road-hazard replacement within the first 12 months, a limited warranty up to 72 months, and treadwear coverage up to 120,000 km on select products. General Canada does not publish a kilometre figure per model, so the US ratings are the guide: 75,000 miles (about 120,000 km) on the AltiMAX RT45, 60,000 miles (about 96,000 km) on the 365 AW, Grabber A/TX and APT, and none on the winters.
