Tire Shop for Nanton

Nanton is forty minutes south of us on Highway 2, and the drivers who make that trip are usually doing it for one of two reasons: a farm truck that needs a tire built for the work, or a commuter set that has to be right for a highway run in the dark. Both are worth doing once and doing properly, which is how we would rather work anyway.

The drive from Nanton

Fifty-three kilometres of Highway 2, and worth booking properly.

It is a straight run north on Highway 2, past Cayley and through High River, and it takes about forty minutes. That is the longest regular drive anyone makes to us, which is why we treat a Nanton booking differently: we would rather you tell us the whole list up front and get it all done in one visit than have you drive back next week.

Take the Okotoks exit, follow Highway 7 into town, and we are on South Railway Street by the tracks with parking out front. Saturday mornings we are open nine to one, which is an easy slot to take from Nanton.

If you are ordering tires, order them a week ahead so they are on the shelf when you arrive. Nobody should drive fifty-three kilometres to find out a size is coming Thursday.

What Highway 2 and the section roads do

Highway heat, wind, gravel and the winter that arrives first out there.

Highway 2 south of High River is fast, open and exposed. Sustained highway speed builds heat in a tire, and heat plus an underinflated sidewall is the mechanism behind most highway blowouts. Pressures matter more on that run than they do around town, and they change with every cold snap: about one psi for every five degrees.

Wind is the other highway factor. A crosswind on packed snow moves a light trailer around, and a set that is worn or mismatched front to rear makes that worse.

Off the highway it is section roads and gravel, which is a sidewall and load rating conversation rather than a tread one. Farm trucks and grain trailers want a light truck casing built to carry, and the tires that fail out there are usually the ones that were the right size and the wrong load range.

What we fit most for Nanton

Working truck tires, trailer sets and winter for the commute.

Truck and LT tires are the bulk of it. Half-tons through one-tons doing farm work, hauling and the commute north, in load ranges matched to what they actually carry. If you tow, the load index is the specification to protect, and we will say so even when a lighter tire is cheaper.

Trailer tires are the other half. Grain, stock and equipment trailers run ST tires that age out long before they wear out, and the date code on the sidewall matters more than the tread depth. If the trailer sat all winter, check it before the first load.

For the highway commuters, a proper winter set is the honest answer, because Highway 2 in the dark in January is the situation winter tires were built for. An all-weather set is the compromise for anyone who will not book two changeovers a year.

One trip, everything done

Forty minutes each way is worth planning around.

Tell us the whole list when you book. A changeover, a wheel alignment, a rotation and balance and the slow leak you have been topping up can all happen in one visit if we know they are coming.

Book two to three weeks ahead in October and April. Those weeks fill from the whole Foothills at once, and a Nanton customer should not be driving up on the chance that a bay is free.

Storage earns its keep at this distance more than at any other. Two trips a year with four tires in the box is 200 kilometres of hauling rubber that could be on our rack instead.
