ALL-SEASON // APRIL TO OCTOBER
All-Season Tires in Okotoks
In most of Canada an all-season is a three-season tire, and in the Foothills that is exactly how to run it: April to October on a vehicle that gets winters, or year-round on the summer car that stays in the garage from November. Honest about that, it is the longest-wearing, quietest, cheapest tire on the rack.
Are all-season tires enough for Okotoks?
Above 7°C, yes. Below it, no.
An all-season tire is built for a climate that does not have a Foothills winter. Its compound is tuned for warm pavement and long life, and below about 7°C it hardens and stops gripping, snow or no snow. The M+S on the sidewall means the tread has enough void to clear mud and slush; it is not a cold-weather test and it is not the snowflake.
Run the right way, an all-season is a fine tire here. The classic Foothills setup is two sets: all-seasons from mid-April to mid-October, winters the rest of the year, ideally each on its own wheels so the changeover is a forty-five-minute swap. The other honest use is the summer car, the truck that hibernates, or the second vehicle that does not leave the garage between November and April.
What it is not is a year-round tire in Okotoks. If a changeover is the problem, the answer is an all-weather, not an all-season in January.
All-season, all-weather or winter?
The same three tires, organised around the one you are looking at.
The short version: above 7°C the all-season is the best tire of the three, quieter, longer-wearing and cheaper. Below 7°C it is the worst, and no tread pattern changes that. Which is why the strip below is a season, not a year.
Rated for Foothills roads, not the brochure.
Where each tire actually works
Solid = grips as designed. Hatched = works, but wearing fast or losing bite. Below 7°C an all-season compound hardens; above it a winter compound wears in a hurry.
When do all-seasons go on and come off?
The mirror of the winter rule.
On when daytime highs stay above 7°C, which in Okotoks is usually the middle of April and sometimes later. Off when they drop below it, usually mid-October. The spring trap is the warm week in late March that talks people into an early swap; the ice comes back, and it comes back on a set of all-seasons. The fall trap is the chinook week in early November that talks people out of the winters. Watch the highs, not the calendar.
The eight weeks after the first snow, and the eight after the first warm stretch in April, are our busiest of the year. Book the changeover a week or two out, and if the off-season set has nowhere to live, storage takes the hauling out of it.
Which all-season tires do we stock?
The majors' touring lines, in every common size.
Michelin Defender, Bridgestone Turanza and Ecopia, Continental TrueContact and PureContact, Goodyear Assurance, Hankook Kinergy, Toyo Extensa, Yokohama Avid, Pirelli P4 and Cinturato, General Altimax, Cooper CS5, Hercules Roadtour, Uniroyal Tiger Paw and Dunlop are the touring lines that move through the bay, plus the light-truck all-seasons for half-tons. The search below is the source of truth for the shelf today, and anything we do not have, we order in.
What do all-season tires cost in Okotoks?
The most tire per dollar, if you run them in the right months.
Per tire, the all-season is the cheapest of the three, and per kilometre it is cheaper still, because a touring line rotated on schedule is often the longest-wearing tire you can buy. The catch is that it only counts if the set is off the car when the thermometer says so. Can I drive all-season tires through an Okotoks winter?
Legally, yes. Wisely, no. Below 7°C the compound hardens and stopping distances on ice stretch by a car length or more. Run them April to October, or choose an all-weather if you will not do a changeover.
What does M+S mean on an all-season tire?
Mud and snow: a tread-pattern description with enough void to clear slush. It is not a cold-weather test and it is not the three-peak mountain snowflake, which is what winter and all-weather tires earn.
All-season or all-weather for a second car?
If the car sleeps from November to April, all-season. If it drives in winter at all, all-weather, or all-seasons plus a winter set.
How long do all-season tires last?
Often the longest of the three. A touring line rotated every 8,000 to 10,000 km and aligned when the wear says so can run past 80,000 km, and some carry warranties well beyond that.
How much do all-season tires cost in Okotoks?
