Why BFGoodrich for Foothills driving?

Gravel and snow toughness, with one honest caveat about ice.

BFGoodrich is a truck brand first, and the Foothills is truck country. For an F-150 or a three-quarter-ton that spends real time on the range roads west of town, the All-Terrain T/A KO3 is the one: snowflake-rated, an 80,000 km warranty, better wear and gravel durability than the KO2 it replaces, on the same sidewalls. Sizes are still rolling out through 2026, so the KO2 stays available where the KO3 is not there yet. For a truck or SUV that lives on Highway 2 and sees gravel on the weekend, the Trail-Terrain T/A+ is the better call: on-road manners, the snowflake, and 105,000 km of coverage. Three-quarter-tons hauling on gravel get the HD-Terrain T/A KT, built for chip-and-tear resistance, though BFGoodrich itself says it is not for icy roads.

The honest caveat is ice. A snowflake on an all-terrain means it passed a snow test, not an ice test. A Calgary F-150 owner rated his KO2s two or three out of ten on ice against a Blizzak's nine, and an Ottawa Valley owner warns the rubber goes hard at minus 40. After a chinook, when Highway 7 and the school-zone intersections glaze over, an all-terrain is not a winter tire. That is what the Winter T/A KSI is for: a Canada-only winter tire for cars, crossovers and SUVs that owners call great on ice and snow, on in October and off in April.

For a car on the Highway 2 commute, the Advantage Control is the long-life all-season with a 120,000 km warranty, and the Advantage Control HT does the same job for a full-size SUV or light pickup. Neither is a winter tire; BFGoodrich pitches the HT for mild winters with occasional snowfall, which is not ours. Pair either with a KSI for the cold months.

BFGoodrich, the short history

North America's first tire factory, and the first all-terrain tire.

BFGoodrich is the oldest tire name in North America. Dr. Benjamin Franklin Goodrich opened the continent's first tire factory in Akron, Ohio, in 1870, and the firsts kept coming: the first vehicle to cross the United States rode on its tires in 1903, the first tubeless tire for American cars arrived in 1947, the first radial on the American market in 1965, and in 1976 the world's first all-terrain tire, the ancestor of today's KO3. The Space Shuttle Columbia flew on BFGoodrich rubber in 1981, and the brand took 21 straight Baja 1000 wins from 1986 to 2007. Today it is a Michelin Group brand; in Canada it is run from Michelin's Laval, Quebec office, which is where the Canada-only Winter T/A KSI was launched in 2017. We could not verify any BFGoodrich line as Canadian-built.

The praise is about toughness. Prairie truck owners love the KO2 and KO3 for their sidewalls, deep-snow and slush traction, and the look on a half-ton; a Tahoe driver in the same threads got a decade and 80,000-plus miles from a set, whiteouts included. KSI owners on BFGoodrich's Canadian site call it "great on ice, snow, slush", and a CR-V owner rates it better than X-Ice in snow for the money.

The gripes are ice and cold. A Calgary F-150 owner rated the KO2 "2-3" out of ten on ice against a Blizzak's nine and switched to dedicated winters after a highway incident; a Calgary Tundra owner found his first icy days on KO2s "terrible and even unsafe" with a shimmy at speed; an Ottawa Valley owner notes the rubber goes hard at minus 40. HD-Terrain owners report a real fuel-economy penalty. The KSI runs louder than an X-Ice and wears quicker in a dry winter. Are BFGoodrich winter tires good for Okotoks?

What is the difference between the KO2 and the KO3?

The All-Terrain T/A KO3 replaces the KO2 with better wear, better gravel durability and more snow traction on the same tough sidewalls, with the snowflake and an 80,000 km warranty. Canadian sizes have been rolling out since August 2024 and continue through 2026, so the KO2 stays available where your size is not in the KO3 yet. Either is a fine range-road tire; neither is an ice tire.

Does BFGoodrich make an all-weather tire?

Not a passenger one. The closest is the Trail-Terrain T/A+, an on-road all-terrain for crossovers, SUVs and pickups that carries the snowflake and a 105,000 km warranty, and it stays on year-round.
