Foothills County wraps around Okotoks on every side, 3,600 square kilometres of it, from Aldersyde and Blackie in the east to Millarville and Priddis in the west. About 25,000 people live out there and a good share of them are our regulars, because the county is where gravel, hills, trailers and long driveways all meet, and that combination decides tires more than any brand argument does.

Wherever you are in the county, we are one of the closest shops

Ten minutes from Aldersyde, thirty-five from Priddis.

The county surrounds Okotoks, so the drive depends on which side you are on. Aldersyde is ten minutes up the 2A. Blackie and Cayley come in on Highway 23 and Highway 2. Millarville is about twenty-five minutes on Highway 549, and Priddis about thirty-five through 22X and the 762. Heritage Pointe and De Winton are closer still.

Whichever direction you come from, we are on South Railway Street by the tracks with parking out front, and there is no city driving in any of it. For most of the county we are considerably closer than anything in Calgary, and we are open Saturday mornings nine to one.

What county roads do to tires

Gravel, washboard, frost heaves and a long private lane at the end.

The county is gravel and chip seal more than it is pavement, and gravel attacks tires from the side. Cuts, chips and slow leaks from the shoulder area are the common damage, and a sidewall puncture is the one repair we cannot do, which is the argument for a light truck casing on anything that lives out there.

Washboard is the second factor. Constant small impacts shake alignment settings out over a season and wear shocks, and a truck that has been running range roads all summer usually needs an alignment before it needs tires.

Then winter. County roads get ploughed after the highways do, private lanes get ploughed when somebody gets to them, and a hill that glazes after a chinook stays glazed in the shade. That is the case for studs, and out here it is a case a lot of people make.

What we fit most in the county

All-terrains, studded winters, trailer sets and the odd tractor tire question.

Most county trucks run a snowflake-rated all-terrain in a load range matched to the trailer behind them, and a fair number add a studded winter set for the months when the lane is ice. That combination handles gravel, highway and the worst mornings without pretending one tire does everything.

Horse, stock and equipment trailer tires are a constant, and the date code is the number to watch. So are ATV and side-by-side tires, since half the county has one in the shop.

Acreage SUVs and crossovers doing the run into Okotoks or Calgary usually do best on a proper winter set, or on all-weathers if the driving is short and mostly on cleared roads. We will tell you which one your driving actually calls for.

Repairs, rotations and pressure checks, not just new sets.

The county work that matters most is the small stuff done on time: a repair the day you find the nail, a rotation at every changeover, pressures checked before you tow. That is what makes a set last, and it is why having the shop ten to thirty-five minutes away beats having it in the city.

For the bigger jobs, trailer, RV and fleet work gets booked around your season rather than ours. Tell us when the trailer is needed and we will work back from it.

And storage, so the off-season set is not living in the barn with the mice. Chalk-marked, racked and climate-controlled, ready in the bay when you book the swap.

Which communities does this cover?

Foothills County includes Aldersyde, Blackie, Cayley, De Winton, Hartell, Heritage Pointe, Millarville, Naptha, Priddis and Priddis Greens, and it surrounds Okotoks, High River, Diamond Valley and Longview.

How far are you from the west side of the county?

Millarville is about twenty-five minutes on Highway 549 and Priddis about thirty-five through 22X and the 762. Aldersyde in the east is ten.

Do you repair gravel damage?

Punctures in the tread area, yes, with a proper plug and patch from the inside. Cuts in the sidewall or shoulder are not repairable on any tire, whatever the kits claim.

Can you do trailer and equipment tires?

Yes. Trailer, RV and fleet work is a real part of the business, and we book it around your season.

Are studs worth it out here?

On a lane or a hill that glazes after a chinook, yes. They are legal in Alberta year-round and they do what no rubber compound does on polished ice.
