Goodyear Tires in Okotoks
Goodyear is the one big name that builds tires in Alberta: the Medicine Hat plant has run since 1960, and Napanee, Ontario is mid-way through a large expansion. In the bay that means WinterCommand and Ultra Grip winters, the snowflake-rated WeatherReady 2 all-weather, and a Wrangler truck range that includes the DuraTrac, the tire prairie half-tons seem to favour.
Why Goodyear for Foothills driving?
Commuter winters at one end, a deep prairie truck range at the other.
Goodyear covers the two ends of Foothills driving well. For the Highway 2 commuter in a sedan or crossover, the WinterCommand Ultra is the studless winter, launched head to head against the Michelin X-Ice and Bridgestone Blizzak, and the Ultra Grip Ice WRT is the older studless line still sold in Canada. For the car that runs range roads west of town, the WinterCommand takes studs and comes in LT sizes for pickups. For the one-set driver who would rather skip the October and April changeovers, the Assurance WeatherReady 2 carries the three-peak snowflake and a 95,000 km warranty.
The truck side is where the brand lives on the prairie. The Wrangler Workhorse AT 2 is snowflake-rated with a 90,000 km warranty, built for F-Series and work vans; the Outbound AT is the half-ton all-terrain with 105,000 km of coverage; the Steadfast HT is the highway tire for the three-quarter-ton that tows out Highway 7 and back; the DuraTrac RT is the successor to the all-terrain prairie truck owners talk about most, and the Boulder MT is the mud tire. Electric pickups get the Wrangler ElectricDrive AT, snowflake-rated with foam noise damping.
The honest caveat is wear. The DuraTrac is excellent in deep snow and slush for about two prairie winters, then the siping wears down and the winter bite goes with it. A chinook week that melts the range roads by noon and freezes them again by dusk is exactly where a half-worn set shows its age. Check the tread in October, and if a DuraTrac is on its third winter, run a dedicated winter set or expect it to feel like an all-season on ice.

Goodyear, the short history
Akron in 1898, Bowmanville in 1910, Medicine Hat since 1960.
Goodyear was founded in 1898 in two empty factories on Market Street in Akron, Ohio, by Frank Seiberling and his brother Charley, and named for Charles Goodyear, the chemist who discovered vulcanization in 1839. It built the straight-sided tire with a braided wire bead in 1901 and the first all-weather tread in 1908, launched the blimps in 1925 and put tires on the moon. It bought Cooper Tire in June 2021 and runs 49 plants worldwide, two of them in Canada. Its first plant outside the United States was Bowmanville, Ontario, in 1910. The Medicine Hat, Alberta plant has made consumer tires since June 1960 and employs more than 200 people. Napanee, Ontario opened in 1988, employs more than 800, and is mid-way through a major expansion for EV and all-terrain tires, due to finish in 2027.
What Alberta owners say
Paraphrased from the prairie truck threads and Canadian winter reviews, praise and gripes both.
Alberta voices on Goodyear are thinner online than on Toyo or Cooper, and they cluster around the DuraTrac. An Alberta half-ton owner who only buys snowflake-rated all-terrains calls it his current favourite and says that for two prairie winters it was an amazing tire, then it was not, once the siping wore down. A Canadian reviewer who ran the new DuraTrac RT through a full winter on a Ram 1500 found it good on snow and ice all season, though the tread measured narrower than the old DuraTrac.
On the winters, WinterCommand owners praise deep-snow grip and a quiet highway ride; one reports the rubber stiffening and losing grip below about minus 10. WinterCommand Ultra owners flag tread life, roughly two seasons before it gets loud. WeatherReady 2 owners say it launches and corners well in snow but runs louder than the factory tires. Our read: the trucks are the reason to buy Goodyear here, with a tread check every October; on the winters, the Ultra is the ice tire and the studdable WinterCommand the deep-snow one.

Are Goodyear winter tires good for Okotoks?
Yes. The WinterCommand Ultra is the studless ice-and-snow tire, launched against the Michelin X-Ice and Bridgestone Blizzak, and owners rate it well on ice with the note that it wears quicker than some. The WinterCommand takes studs and comes in LT sizes, which suits a pickup on the gravel west of town; owners praise its deep-snow grip but say the rubber stiffens below about minus 10. See our winter tire page for how the types compare.
Does Goodyear make tires in Alberta?
Yes. The Medicine Hat plant has produced consumer tires since June 1960, employs more than 200 people and is one of two Goodyear plants in Canada; the other is Napanee, Ontario, opened in 1988 and now expanding to build EV and all-terrain tires. Goodyear does not publish which lines come out of which plant, so we cannot promise a given tire was built in Alberta.
Does Goodyear make an all-weather tire?
Yes, the Assurance WeatherReady 2: three-peak mountain snowflake rated, a 95,000 km tread-life warranty and sizes for the CR-V, RAV4, Explorer, Camry and Accord class. It replaced the first WeatherReady in most sizes from 2024. Owners say it launches and corners well in snow and runs a little louder than factory tires. More on the type on our all-weather page.
What warranty do Goodyear tires carry in Canada?
Goodyear Canada warrants replacement tires against wear-out for up to six years or the distance stated for the line: 95,000 km on the Assurance WeatherReady 2, 105,000 km on the Wrangler Outbound AT, 90,000 km on the Wrangler Workhorse AT 2 and 80,000 km on the Wrangler ElectricDrive AT.
