DUNLOP // BELFAST, SINCE 1888
Dunlop Tires in Okotoks
Dunlop is the oldest name in tires, the company that made the first practical air-filled tire in 1888, and since May 2025 it belongs to Sumitomo Rubber, the people behind Falken. The Canadian lineup is short for now: the Winter Maxx WM02 and SJ8 studless winters and the Blue Response touring all-season, mid-market, with a seven-year warranty in kilometres.
Why Dunlop for Foothills driving?
Three lines today, so the fit is narrow, and we will say where it ends.
Dunlop in Canada right now is three tires, and we would rather say so than pad the list. The Winter Maxx SJ8 is the one that fits this town best: a studless winter for crossovers, SUVs and light trucks with a directional tread and a silica compound, which puts it on the half-tons and family SUVs that run Highway 2 to Calgary all winter. An Edmonton F-150 owner sums it up the way most do: awesome in snow, slips a little on ice. A rural owner rated it near perfect on lightly used packed gravel, which is the range roads west of town in January.
The Winter Maxx WM02 covers the cars and small crossovers with an asymmetric tread and 3D sipes, and the Winter Maxx family has a long record of strong snow and slush grip for the money. Both winters carry an 80,000 km tread warranty over seven years, which is unusual on a winter tire. For the April changeover, the Blue Response A/S is a touring all-season for the commuter sedan and CUV with a 130,000 km warranty. It is not a winter tire, so it comes off in October.
Where it ends: there is no Dunlop all-weather, all-terrain, highway-truck, stud-ready or EV line in Canada today, so a three-quarter-ton that works gravel or a one-set driver should look at another brand on this site for now. Sumitomo says its Grandtrek truck tires roll out from 2026, and we will add them as they land. The caveat from owners: on the glare ice a chinook leaves, the Winter Maxx sits a step behind Blizzak and X-Ice, and the original Winter Maxx drew wet-road complaints on light front-drive cars. If you are on the Highway 7 gravel more than pavement, a stud-ready tire is the safer buy.

Dunlop, the short history
The 1888 air-filled tire, a century split between owners, and a 2025 homecoming.
John Boyd Dunlop, a Scottish vet in Belfast, built an air-filled rubber tire for his son's tricycle in 1888 and patented it that December. The company formed the next year with financier Harvey du Cros, opened its first factory in Dublin, and made solid tires obsolete within twenty years. Dunlop Japan was set up in Kobe in 1909 with Sumitomo money and became Sumitomo Rubber Industries in 1963. Sumitomo bought Dunlop's tire business in 1985, then licensed North America and Europe to Goodyear under a 1999 alliance. That alliance ended in 2015, and on 7 May 2025 Goodyear sold the Dunlop brand for Europe, North America and Oceania back to Sumitomo. Canada is now served by Dunlop Tires North America in Rancho Cucamonga, California, the same company behind Falken, which began selling its own Dunlops in December 2025.
What Alberta owners say
Good value in snow, honest about ice. Paraphrased from owners, mostly outside Alberta.
Alberta chatter on Dunlop is thin; the one prairie voice we found is an Edmonton F-150 owner on the Winter Maxx SJ8: "I like them, they do slip a little bit on ice but awesome on snow." A rural owner on the same tire said the sipes really bite on hard-packed snow and called it the perfect tire for lightly used packed gravel. Further afield, the Winter Maxx gets steady praise for snow, slush and cold-weather grip at a price below Blizzak, from a Grand Cherokee driver in eight inches of snow to a WRX owner who would buy them again.
The gripes: ice grip a step below Blizzak and X-Ice, wet-road squirm on the original Winter Maxx (a C63 owner called it "a bit scary on wet roads"), and no bite in wet snow on a light Corolla. Our read: the SJ8 is a sound buy for a half-ton or SUV that sees more snow than ice, and the WM02 is a fair-priced winter for the commuter car, knowing the lineup is three tires deep for now.
What Dunlop tires cost in Okotoks
Mid-market, with a seven-year warranty in kilometres on every line.
Dunlop sits in the mid-market, below Bridgestone and Michelin on price. The warranty is the strongest part of the pitch, and it is quoted in kilometres for Canada: seven years of coverage with 80,000 km of tread life on the Winter Maxx WM02 and SJ8 and 130,000 km on the Blue Response A/S, plus road hazard coverage, a 90-day trial and roadside assistance on all three. Are Dunlop winter tires good for Okotoks?
For snow and gravel, yes. The Winter Maxx SJ8 gets consistent marks from truck and SUV owners for snow, slush and packed gravel, and the WM02 does the same job for cars; both carry an 80,000 km tread warranty. On glare ice they sit a step behind Blizzak and X-Ice, and Dunlop has no stud-ready tire in Canada, so a range-road driver should compare the studdable options first.
Who makes Dunlop tires now?
Sumitomo Rubber Industries of Kobe, Japan. Goodyear ran the Dunlop brand in North America under a licence from 1999, and on 7 May 2025 it sold the brand for Europe, North America and Oceania back to Sumitomo. Canada is now served by Dunlop Tires North America in California, the same company behind Falken, which started selling its own Dunlop tires in December 2025. Goodyear-era Dunlops are still working through retailers, but the three lines above are the current ones.
Does Dunlop make an all-weather tire?
Not in Canada. Sumitomo sells its all-weather tire under the Falken name in North America, and there is no Dunlop all-terrain, EV or trailer line here either. If you want one set year-round, see our all-weather tires page for the brands that make one.
What warranty do Dunlop tires carry in Canada?
Seven years of coverage on every current line, with tread life quoted in kilometres: 80,000 km on the Winter Maxx WM02 and SJ8, 130,000 km on the Blue Response A/S. All three add road hazard coverage, a 90-day trial and roadside assistance. An 80,000 km figure on a winter tire is unusual and worth something.
