Why are trailer, ATV and RV tires so different?

Three jobs, three constructions. None of them is a car tire.

A trailer tire never steers and never drives; it follows, carries and sits, so it is built with stiff sidewalls that resist sway and a high load rating for its size. An ATV or UTV tire does the opposite job: it drives, at low pressure, on ground that would shred a road tire, so it is built soft, knobby and tough in the carcass. An RV or camper tire carries a house at highway speed, so it is built like a light-truck tire, in load ranges that go well past anything a trailer runs.

What they share is the part people forget: none of them lives on the road year-round, and all of them age out before they wear out. Alberta sun, cold cycles and months of sitting loaded in the same spot crack the rubber from the inside while the tread still looks fine. The four-digit date code on the sidewall, week and year of manufacture, matters more on these three than on any tire on a daily driver.

Trailer, ATV & UTV, or RV & camper?

Trailer tires: built to follow, carry and sit

ST on the sidewall, load range from the placard, pressure at the maximum.

An ST tire, Special Trailer, runs at the maximum cold pressure on its sidewall, because that is how its load rating is earned, and it is speed-rated to about 120 km/h on most modern lines, which is plenty for Highway 2 with a boat behind you. The load range, C, D or E, comes off the trailer's placard, and going under it to save money is how a tire lets go on the highway with a trailer swaying behind it. Boat, flatbed, horse and cargo trailers around here mostly run the same handful of sizes, and a set on loose wheels is usually same-day.

The rule that matters most is age. Five to six years from the date code, whatever the tread looks like, because a trailer tire spends most of its life parked in the sun and the cold, and that is what kills it.

ATV and UTV tires: which tread for the Foothills?

Trail, mud, or the all-purpose that does most of both.

ATV and side-by-side tires come in three families: a trail tread with tight knobs for hard-packed ground, a mud tread with tall paddles that clear and bite, and an all-purpose pattern between the two that most Foothills riders end up on, because a day out here mixes range road, cut line and the odd bog. They run at low pressure, single digits to the mid-teens, which is where the sidewall flexes and the knobs find grip. Ply rating matters more than people think: a six-ply carcass survives the stone and stick punctures that finish a four-ply. Bring the wheels in loose and we mount, seal and seat the beads; bring the machine and we jack it here.

RV and camper tires: the sitting problem

Flat-spotting, sun, and the age rule again.

A camper or motorhome spends most of its life parked, and that is what kills its tires: flat spots from sitting loaded on one patch, sidewall cracking from UV, and age. Motorhomes run LT-built tires in load ranges that go to E and beyond, and the right pressure is the one for the loaded weight, which means weighing the unit loaded rather than trusting the sidewall maximum. Dual rear wheels need the inner tires checked as carefully as the outers. Check the date code every spring, cover the tires when the unit is parked, and treat a tire that looks fine at seven years old as one that is not.
